This article focuses on gender role differences, gender challenges and the existence of
gender based political violence in rural local governance, in the Sivagangai district of Tamil Nadu. The Harvard Analytical Framework was used for constructing the interview schedule and the non-parametric chi-square test was applied to analyse the influence of gender in rural local body meetings. The study reveals that though women and men respondents face similar challenges, some challenges are unique to women.
