The first edition was designed to serve as a textbook for engineering courses without any need for frequent changes. Improved contract conditions and management techniques were taken care of in the second edition. The use of FIDIC and other similar standard contract forms, particularly Public Private Partnership (PPP), construction of public works on build, operate and transfer (BOT) basis and other developments necessitated the third edition.
